Major research contributions include: - Large scale studies of smartphone application usage and mobile behaviour. - Novel interaction techniques for wearable devices, including smartwatch navigation. - Human centred navigation systems using landmarks, sound, and multimodal interaction. - Research on interactive surfaces, spatial interfaces, and future interaction technologies. - Applications of artificial intelligence and large scale spatial datasets to scientific and societal challenges. His research has been published at leading Human Computer Interaction venues, including ACM CHI, ACM DIS, ACM MobileHCI, ACM IMWUT, and related interdisciplinary journals such as Nature and PLOS One. ## Academic Recognition Johannes Schöning is an ACM Distinguished Member, recognised by the Association for Computing Machinery for contributions to the advancement of geospatial Human Computer Interaction and novel user interfaces. He is a recipient of the ACM Eugene L. Lawler Award for Humanitarian Contributions within Computer Science and Informatics, awarded for his contributions to Geoinformatics at School. He was awarded a Lichtenberg Professorship supported by the Volkswagen Foundation. The Lichtenberg Professorship recognised outstanding early career researchers. It enabled the establishment of new research directions in Human Computer Interaction and interactive systems. ## HCI Community Leadership Johannes Schöning has made significant contributions to the development of the international Human Computer Interaction research community. These contributions span academic leadership, conference organisation, and community building. He is one of the leading figures in HCI in Europe, Switzerland, and Germany. He served as President of the ACM SIGCHI Switzerland Chapter, supporting the growth of the Swiss Human Computer Interaction community and strengthening connections between researchers, students, and practitioners. He is a founder and organiser of AlpCHI, the Human Computer Interaction conference of the Alpine region. AlpCHI brings together HCI researchers and practitioners from Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy, France, and neighbouring regions. He was instrumental in establishing and shaping the ITS (Interactive Tabletops and Surfaces) and ISS (Interactive Surfaces and Spaces) conference series. These became important international venues for research on interactive surfaces, spatial interfaces, and emerging interaction technologies. He contributed to this development through the organisation of multi-touch workshops and bootcamps, which supported education, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among researchers working on novel interaction techniques.
